HAMLET ACT I SCENE III

Hamlet favors/shows affection/flirting with 'his love'

Ophelia (Laertes’ sister) – not permanent, considered toy

Laertes is ‘warning’ his sister and advising her not to fall in love with Hamlet (he’s ‘no ordinary person’, he’s  a prince with obligations that go away from him personality (in a way it’s terrible advice)

‘Hamlet might tell you (Ophelia) that he loves you but he’s not allowed to act on it’

Fear it, fear it, stay distant (out of shot/danger to desire) [be wary then…if you have a child by him]

What do ungracious pastors do? Ophelia says don’t be a hypocrite, he needs to follow his own advice… Laertes says the same things

Polonius gives great advice to Laertes/Polonius is telling Laertes to:  not speak your thought/mind…keep your mouth shut and think before you do anything, don’t reflect badly on yourself , make good friends and don’t feel like you have to be friends with everyone- take each man’s judgment but reserve yours + have integrity

Very presumptuous of Polonius to tell Ophelia. “You do not understand yourself so clearly.” Does not see have as an independent thinker

Indirect characterization- Polonius is good at giving advice in two dialogues (Laertes + Ophelia)
