HAMLET ACT II SCENE I


  • Polonius is trying to gain info on son from Reynaldo

  • (Opp. from Hamlet's swear w/friends) he's trying to get Reynaldo to confess and tell each other of ghost

  • Characterization: Polonius isn't honest and self-absorbed 

  • Bait → find out the real stuff

  • "By indirections find directions out." 

Possible interpretation 1→ Hamlet is lovesick + expressed himself

Possible interpretation 2→ Part of 'vengeance' plan

Possible interpretation 3→ Ophelia is just lying through teeth

  • Sith → Since, Claudius is acknowledging that he doesn't know why Hamlet is crazy (manipulator) 
                     ↳ Asking his two friends and using them
  • Voltimand → Uncle found out that had crew to attack Hamlet in Denmark

  • #PoloniusSays: "...brevity is the soul of wit..."

  • ↓ when have I been wrong? Cut head off if so

  • #PoloniusSays: [Aside] "Though this be madness, yet there is method in't."

  • Hamlet's planning something ("fools...")

  • #HamletSays: "...for there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so..."

  • Hamlet tells friends that questions are set up and are being paid to ask them
