HAMLET ACT I SCENE V


  • ·         Limbo, purgatory → hell
  • ·         Ghost spirit confirms identity (Hamlet Sr.)
  • ·         Ghost (directive) – Revenge his foul + most unnatural
  • ·         Hamlet, “prophetic soul” → has proof of Claudius being the murderer (Hamlet has now found out + confirmed the death of his father)

  • ·         Claudius intentionally seduced Queen Gertrude at the end of Hamlet’s life

  • -King and Queen had falling out towards the death of Hamlet while Gertrude went for his brother willingly

  • ·         Claudius stole Hamlet Sr.’s life + Queen

  • ·         “Taint not thy mind, nor let thy soul contrive”  

  • -Gives burden to son that he has to kill king however says that he shouldn’t let this drive him crazy

  • ·         Let mother go to heaven, don’t do anything to her (Guilt will get her)

  • ·         There is no ambiguity in play (knowing vs. doing)

  • ·         Hamlet is now relived and confirms presence of ghost (O, wonderful!)

  • ·         #HamletSays “There are more things in heaven and Earth, Horatio,
                                  Than are dreamt of in your philosophy.”

  • ·         #HamletSays “The time is out of joint: O cursed spite,
                                  That ever I was than to set it right!”

  • ·         Hamlet states that he is going to now ACT crazy
