HAMLET ACT I SCENE II

  • Hamlet Sr. recently died (there is mourning still)

  • Gertrude was sister-in-law, consistently queen (quite an on-off situation, however)

  • Cognitive dissonance- two ideas put together that do not make sense when paired/ contradict each other almost, afflict one another. Shakespeare was KING of this (and everything else)

  • Hamlet's first line in the play: [aside] A little more than kin, and less than kind.

  • visage= facial expression

  • obsequious sorrow > Hamlet wants to grieve for vengeance of Claudius

  • Claudius talks crap to Hamlet for his grief

  • Six major monologues in play

  • Hamlet gives himself away with his inner-most thoughts + feelings (First play in history to do so)

  • Hamlet has homicidal feelings-- he's pissed! (O, that this too...)

  • satyr= gross, goat-humping creature #NASTY

  • Horatio tells Hamlet that he saw Hamlet Sr.'s ghost

  • Hamlet is intelligent + disciplined- he's just acting in these different characters/personalities (NOT bipolar/schizophrenic)
