HAMLET ACT III + "The Performative Utterance in William Shakespeare's Hamlet"

  • Hamlet mistakenly kills Polonius- thinking it was Claudius from behind
  • Hamlet looses control after killing Polonius- part from shock/disappointment
  •  #QueenGertrudeSays: "The lady protests too much me thinks."
  • Shakespearean Sex Talk → tension-breaker (Shakespeare is essentially the inventor of the tension-breaker)
  • Play within Hamlet → "Mousetrap"
  • Horatio admitted that he believes Claudius is responsible for King Hamlet's death
  • Polonius is a person word → All talk!
  • Claudius is a person of action → All do!
  • Performance of utterance has effect of speech
              ↳ Hamlet is self-discovering (insightful)
  • Hamlet is honest to his mother, being straight-up/acting upon feelings
  • Create expectations through words
             ↳ Speech as trans-formative action
  • locutionary - the ability of language to deliver a message, the force of mutual intelligibility
  • illocutionary - what is done in being said, such as denying a request, giving an order, etc
  • perlocutiinary - what is achieved by being said, the consequences of one's utterance, such as an order being followed (or refused)
  • Hamlet ain't playing no mo'! #from0to100realquick He's spewing out the truth to his mother. Queen Gertrude. Unbottling all his complex and intense emotions towards his fathers death + Claudius
  • "Those who use performative utterance create new facts in the world of speaking."
